Mosaicos after school program

Updated: Jan 3, 2021

Center for Children and Families, CCFI is a well-funded institution with a proven history of success. These are the areas that the Center manages:

1. Healing Children (Trauma Focused Services),

2. Empowering Youth (Neighborhood Centers),

3. Strengthening Families (Bringing up Babies, Divorce Services, Parents Assistance, Teenage Parenting, Baby Pantry).

MOSAICOS ASP is an after-school pilot project for elementary school Latino children from Truman primary which has one of the highest % of Hispanic children in NPS.

Modeled after the successful CCFI “Neighborhood Centers”, and in partnership with LatinasWIN, Smile Education Foundation (SEF) and the University of Oklahoma (OU), this project will target up to 50 elementary school children once per week (for 2 hours) during the spring semester of 2015.

The program will implement the MindUp curriculum, which includes a socio-emotional and academic component. Marisol Faro, a LatinasWIN member who is also CCFI staff, is in charged of MOSAICOS implementation along with her team at CCFI; and Ellen Kraft a Truman teacher and Board member of SEF will tutor kids.

Additionally, several workshops with extra curricular activities in arts, dance, music and sciences will enrich the experience of these children.

PARENT EDUCATION WORKSHOPS

Latinas WIN has the opportunity to bring their expertise to parents in the form of Parent Workshops. Monthly parent workshops will take place during the last hour of the ASP. Topics will include cultural adjustment, immigration, the Dream Act, best parenting practices, how to navigate the Norman Public School system, how to apply to OU, and much more.

PARENT OUTREACH AND LIAISON

LatinasWIN are matched with the families of the children enrolled in MOSAICOS in order to serve as liaison to the pilot project, address issues/concerns, and linking them to existing resources in the area.

OU PARTICIPATION

Through OU Professor and LatinasWIN member Dr. Jeannette Sánchez Naranjo’s service learning class, OU students practice their Spanish and help MOSAICOS children thrive. Students join the rest of CCFI and SEF volunteers who work with MOSAICOS.

MOSAICOS Project provides an opportunity for LATINAS WIN and Smile Education Foundation to get engaged and commit in a true partnership with CCFI, the University of Oklahoma and the Norman Public Schools in a sustainable program that will impact many children and families.
